Among the talents who should be represented in any birthday celebration of Robert Schumann are his wife, composer and concert pianist Clara Schumann, and his friend violinist virtuoso Joseph Joachim, for whom the FAE sonata featured in this concert was written. Unsurprisingly, George Bernard Shaw had much to say about these musicians and their works; his music criticism, read by Guy Bannerman, punctuates their music at this performance.
