Victoria Scholars is an all-male, award-winning choir. Internationally acclaimed, they’ve released four recordings and have performed with some of the biggest names in classical and contemporary music. Their voices have the clarity and balance of sound characteristic of Renaissance music, but they also feature works from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, as well as contemporary pieces in a variety of styles. This performance will also feature Gregorian chants, sacred and contemporary works as well as pieces by French Canadian composers.
The Victoria Scholars was founded in 1993 by graduates of Toronto’s St. Michael’s Choir School, and takes its name from Tomás Luis de Victoria, an outstanding Spanish composer of the Renaissance period whose music is renowned for its deep spirituality and emotional expressiveness. The essence of the Scholars’ music is an emphasis on the clarity and balance of sound so characteristic of Renaissance music, which the ensemble presents through the unique sonority of male voices.
The Victoria Scholars’ repertoire, however, is not limited to the Renaissance. It encompasses medieval plainchant; works from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras; contemporary pieces in a variety of styles; and newly commissioned works.
The Victoria Scholars has completed successful tours nationally and internationally, and has made appearances as special guest with other artists and performing arts organizations from Toronto and abroad, including the Barenaked Ladies, Kyiv Chamber Choir, Orphei Drängar, St. Michael’s Choir School, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Past winners of the Canada Council Healey Willan Grand Prize in the CBC Radio National Competition for Amateur Choirs, the Victoria Scholars has performed with international vocal soloists Russell Braun, Norine Burgess, Michael Colvin, Richard Margison, Robert Pomakov, Sondra Radvanovsky, Catherine Robbin, Michael Schade, Janice Taylor, James Westman, and Monica Whicher. The choir has recorded with singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt and with Canadian soprano Mary Lou Fallis, in addition to producing its own five widely acclaimed recordings.
