Young Musicians Competition – details

The Youth of Lincoln & Welland Counties are invited to:

Music Niagara’s Inaugural Young Musicians of Niagara Competition

This classical music competition has two divisions: Junior [up to 14 years] & Senior [15-18 years] – age as of 1 Jan 2018 – in the Niagara Region with outstanding skills with Violin, Piano or Voice. The venue will be the Market Room at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Courthouse; the public will be invited to attend the Finals.

The dates for this Competition are:
Registration opens 11May 2018
Registration closes 31 May 2018 (by email) or postmarked 29 May 2018 (by mail)

Preliminary Rounds 22 & 23 June 2018 [Junior & Senior respectively]
Each of up to 8 selected artists per division will play for 15-20 minutes.
Final Rounds 29 & 30 June 2018 [Junior & Senior respectively]
Each of up to 4 selected artists per division will play for 20-25 minutes.

The music selected by each artist must include pieces from two of the following three periods: baroque, classical and romantic. The selected pieces must have contrasting movements (slow, fast). A tuned piano will be available for accompaniment during both Rounds.

Each Winner will receive a free place in our Music Niagara’s Performance Academy’s 9-day Performance Camp in late July 2018 (worth $1,000), two free tickets to Music Niagara’s classical festival concert series in July-August 2018 (worth $2,000) and a cash award of $300; each Runner-up will receive one free ticket to Music Niagara’s classical festival concert series in July-August 2018 (worth $1,000) and a cash award of $200. The winners will also be invited to give a concert during the summer of 2018.

Applicants may request a copy of the Competition Rules with their Registration Form from 11 May 2018 by emailing musicniagaraprojects@gmail.com. An application accompanied by CD/mp3/YouTube may be submitted, at no charge, with examples of their performances to Music Niagara, 1 Shaws Lane, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON L0S 1J0 no later than 5:00pm, 31 May 2018. Three adjudicators, led by Atis Bankas, will select 8 young Niagara-based artists in each of two age divisions to be invited to the Preliminary Round. Performers will receive press coverage.

The Inaugural Young Musicians of Niagara Competition is sponsored by Niagara Investment in Culture (NIC) 2017/2018 Program for the Niagara Region. Additional assistance is being provided by Music Niagara and private donors.
