Tribute to Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

Tribute to Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

Saturday July 28 – 4:00 pm

Join us at St. Mark’s Church on July 28th at 4 PM for an exceptional concert dedicated to the groundbreaking music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. This special event showcases the extraordinary talents of pianist Victoria Korchinskaya-Kogan, along with violinist Atis Bankas, cellist Jonathan Tortolano, joined by two young Ukrainians – violinist Roman Nykorovych and violist Liubomir Kliufinsky. Together, they unite to celebrate the legacy of Coleridge-Taylor, a British composer of mixed-race descent, Coleridge-Taylor achieved such success that he was referred to by white musicians as “African Mahler”. His influences come from Romantic composers that appear along with a spontaneity derived from appreciation of African American folk music, in which Coleridge-Taylor was a pioneer.

The event will be narrated by Dr. William Tortolano, who was first in North America to write and publish two books on the life and music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. In this way Dr. William Tortolano was also a pioneer to draw the attention to Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, resulting in further recognition of the importance of many other Black composers.

Don’t miss this unique chance to immerse yourself in the beautiful, culture-bridging music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. It’s an ideal occasion to celebrate the legacy of a composer who masterfully blended diverse musical traditions, creating a rich tapestry of sound that resonates across time.

Join us for an afternoon of unforgettable music and homage to a truly innovative composer.
